Approximately 30 years ago Eric Wilfinger started the Suburban Youth Baseball League and to this day still runs this league. This league is the premier summer youth travel baseball league in the area with over 40 area towns (including Medfield) and hundreds of area youth participating each year. In addition, you will see Eric at Metacomet Field in Medfield many nights during the spring, summer and fall umpiring our town's youth baseball games. All of the boys playing in those games of the past few years have gotten to know "Mr. Wilfinger"....Eric's demeanor and participation in Medfield's baseball program has been a big plus for everyone involved.
Life has thrown Eric and his wife Maureen a nasty curve ball as Maureen has developed a life threatening illness not seen before by doctors. They've tried all the major hospitals in Boston area and still have no answers. After almost two years of her not being able to work, they have lost over $100,000 in salary, not to mention the medical expenses and are now in jeopardy of losing their home. She has an abnormality within her body and is not able to absorb calories. Today, she weighs a mere 92 pounds and has been shrinking before Eric's eyes. Her heart has been affected and needs special medications to keep her alive. Every day is a struggle just to eat (she is under orders to eat 3000-4000 calories a day and is on bed rest to avoid burning off the calories). She has days where she puts a few pounds on, only to lose them and more a week later. It is a slow descent, and a very tough battle.
Maureen has spent a career caring for others. She was the first female EMT in the City of Boston, taking care of people in critical health crises. She continued her education to render patient care and became a Nationally Certified Healthcare Instructor in both emergency care and health and wellness. After many years of seeing the damage done to children because of abuse and neglect, she and Eric decided they needed to bring these children home and take care of them. For 15 years they handled specialized Foster Care cases. Along the way, they adopted one girl with mental retardation and are blessed with two other girls who are now grown. Over the years they have taken care of more than 30 boys and girls who needed safe harbor.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP.....
We are providing a link for you to make a donation to help. Click here to donate. All funds raised will be pooled together and a donation will be made to the Wilfinger's from the families of Medfield. Any dollar contribution ($5, $10, $20) will be much appreciated to help Eric and Maureen out in this situation. Eric did not ask MYB/S to do this...we were alerted to the situation by the good people who run Westwood Little League and felt it was the right thing to do to help someone out who has given so much of his life to helping others. Thank you for any contributions you are able to make.
Sincerely,
